Our mission at Children's Way is to promote opportunities for children to grow and develop cognitively, emotionally, socially, and physically. We provide activities and experiences that allow children to recognize their own self-worth, while also learning the importance of others and the world around them. We are a play-based half day preschool.
Our program is a September -May preschool experience. Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to): The Teacher is responsible for the implementation of the preschool program and may be assigned supervisory responsibility in the absence of the Director. 1. Treat each child with dignity, respect, and affection and allow for individual differences. 2. Prepare a warm and safe environment that is age- appropriate, clean, and engaging for the curriculum to be explored. 3. Plan and implement a program that meets the emotional, physical, spiritual, intellectual, and social needs of both the individual and the group, through developmentally appropriate practices, in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the program. 4. Interact with the children in all areas of the classroom to encourage their involvement in all activities. 5. Write objectives and goals for each child. 6. Assume responsibility, in conjunction with co-workers, for preparing weekly lesson plans, posting them in the classroom and in the hallway for parents view. Plans need to be posted on the first day of work week. 7. Gear the program to the needs of the individual child, with concern for their interests, special needs and talents, and individual style and pace of learning. 8. Observe, record, and report significant individual and/or group behavior/illness, and keep co-workers and the director informed. 9. Continually evaluate each child’s progress, and communicate these professional observations to the appropriate teammates. 10. Complete child assessment forms in preparation for parent conferences held twice a year. 11. Conduct other parent conferences as deemed necessary by the staff or by the parents. 12. Establish and maintain good communication with parents through verbal contact on a daily basis and through written notes, emails, and/or phone conversations when appropriate. Sensitive issues should be discussed with the director before approaching the parent(s). 13. Create classroom monthly calendar and newsletter to go out to parents in hard copy and via email by the 3rd day of each month. 14. Understand and appropriately implement the duties of a mandated child maltreatment reporter. Report suspected cases of child abuse and/or neglect to Child Protection. 15. Know how many children are in your care at all times. Never leave a child or group of children unattended. 16. Be responsible for actively supervising and ensuring the safety and well-being of the children at all times, both indoors and outdoors. Be alert to the needs and/or problems of the children as individuals and as a group. 17. Plan and supervise class outings/field trips when age-appropriate. 18. Supervise, assist, and participate in all daily routines: a. Arrival -- warmly greet each child and help involve them in the day’s activities. b. Snacks -- Sit and eat with the children while facilitating a pleasant mealtime atmosphere with the group. c. Dressing -- assist children and instruct them in self-help techniques. d. Group time -- plan and conduct an appropriate group time daily to include music, dance, activity songs, instruments, and stories. e. Transitions -- plan appropriate transition activities while supervising the movement of all the children. f. Clean-Up -- teach and encourage children during clean-up time by actively working beside them, demonstrating how to pick up and where to place items. g. Departure -- conduct a safe dismissal time by dismissing the children to the correct pick-up person and by saying a warm good-by to each child. 19. Know the health and emergency policies of the program, and be ready to implement them, if necessary. 20. Initiate and hold monthly Fire Drills and Tornado drills (September, April, May). Record information about drill in Log book. 21. Serve as a knowledgeable resource for other staff. 22. Continually train and supervise the activities of Assistants, Aides, Substitutes, and Volunteers, helping them relate to and supervise the children. 23. Model appropriate positive behavior guidance techniques and train other staff so that discipline is consistent. 24. Work together with all program staff to solve problems, achieve goals, and respectfully communicate needs. 25. Be prepared to be called upon by the director for special duties or assignments. 26. Be familiar with and abide by licensing regulations, and all program policies and procedures. 27. Attend a variety of in-service topics and keep in-service records up to date with documentation of attendance and certificates 28. Attend all staff meetings, and participate in program and family events. 29. Arrive in the classroom on time and be ready to interact positively with all children, parents, and staff. 30. Observe and maintain the confidentiality of students, parents, staff, and the program. 31. Maintain a sense of humor.
Qualifications: 1. Provide documentation of US citizenship or eligibility to work in the US. 2. Complete the background information required by licensing. 3. Have the ability to hear the conversational voice with or without a hearing aid, the ability to see and read newsprint with or without corrective lenses, the ability to speak and be understood under normal circumstances, the ability to lift and carry children and other items weighing up to 50 pounds, and the ability to use arms, hands, legs, and feet with or without corrective devices to accomplish the job, including evacuation of the building during emergencies. 4. Provide documentation of education to meet Rule 3 requirements for teacher. Preferably a four year degree in Early Childhood Education or Development. 5. Display a positive attitude toward work and children. 6. Understand child development and have the ability to foster physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional growth and socialization skills in children. 7. Be able to design and carry out planned learning experiences which will encourage maximum personal growth for each child in the group. 8. Be able to accomplish the above in the context of building on children’s own expressed interests rather than through a highly regimented, adult-centered setting. 9. Be able to direct the activities of assistants, aides, substitutes, and co-workers to promote a supportive, cooperative working atmosphere. 10. Be able to establish and maintain good communication with co-workers, the director, and parents. 11. Be a skilled observer and recorder of children’s progress. 12. Be able to respond immediately to any emergency situation. 13. Be willing to continually increase knowledge in the field of Early Childhood Education.
